Editing Modernism in Canada

Training

DEMiC

The Digital Editing and Modernism in Canada (DEMiC) summer institute is integrated into the annual Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI) which takes place at the University of Victoria. It consists of a week of intensive coursework, small-group seminars, lectures, and demonstrations by experts in the field of digital editing and text production as well as special consultation sessions for EMiC participants.

EMiC is once again offering its own course, Digital Editions, aimed primarily, though not exclusively, at EMiC participants. The course, which will be taught this year by EMiC postdoctoral fellow Matt Huculak, is designed for individuals and groups who are interested in creating a digital edition. Topics covered will include planning and project management, workflow and labour issues, and tools available for edition creation. We will be working with the Islandora Digital Humanities Sprout, an environment specifically created in collaboration with EMiC and its partners for edition production. Over the course of the week, we will work through the practical implementation of a small-scale digital edition. Knowledge of TEI is recommended but not mandatory. The seminar is open to everyone, although preference will be given to participants of the EMiC project.

Digital Editions is highly recommended to all EMiC participants with a basic background in text encoding (specifically, TEI). If you do not have such a background, one option is to enroll in the introductory course Text Encoding Fundamentals and their Application and take Digital Editions in the following year; another is to acquire this background by some other route, such as the online TEI by Example or the Brown Women Writers Project. Without such a background you may find Digital Editions difficult. If you are in any doubt, please contact Professor Zailig Pollock.

If you are returning to DHSI, you may want to consider one of the other relevant intermediate or advanced courses. You are, in any case, free to choose any of the DHSI courses offered.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Check the DHSI website for the courses available, but DO NOT attempt to register directly through the site. You must use the DEMiC registration form to register for the summer institute as an EMiC participant.

We ask that each registrant not only identify his or her top pick, but a ranked list of two alternatives in case the top pick is already full.

The deadline for DEMiC 2012 registration is Friday, October 14th, 2011.
